In 2005, Sea of Galilee Church celebrated 55 years of serving the lower East Side of New York City.
Known many years ago as "Iglesia de Dios Pentecostal," it all began with God's calling upon a man named Genaro Ramos, who at the time was a member of Roca de Horeb Church in Brooklyn. Together with his wife Pilar, and another couple, they humbly began meeting conducting services at 231 Henry Street in the lower east side of Manhattan. In those days, finances was scarce, but they persevered in locating a rental unit and through much prayers and some finances, they faithfully met the need. They quickly outgrew their space and moved on to Montgomery Street. Their efforts were further blessed by God through their desire to reach out to people and share Jesus.
The present location at 166 Eldridge street was a major move of faith and sacrificial giving. The building was finally purchased and dedicated to be what is known today as Sea of Galilee Church.
God has done many wonderful things throughout the years. Many lives have been touched and changed. Many have emerged from the church's ministry, including numerous pastors, community leaders, professionals, educators, social service workers, and many more with a heart and a commitment to love and serve God and others.
Without a doubt, strong foundations were laid for future ministry and vision casting.
Today, our theme is "touching hearts, changing lives" and our prayer and vision is to continue meeting the challenge of loving God and sharing His love with others.
Pastor Anibal Espaillat was born in New York City. He's been an ordained Assemblies of God minister since 2000, having faithfully served as senior pastor at another local comumunity church prior to arriving at Sea of Galilee. He has studied at the Assemblies of God Theological seminary and The Assemblies of God Bible Institute.
Together with his lovely wife Judy, he serves at Sea of Galilee, a very influential and historic church in the lower east side of Manhattan. Our current ministries extend to our caring families and the community.
Pastor Anibal and his wife Judy are passionate about reaching out to people and touching their lives with a positive message of faith and hope. Our mission is to use our gifts to promote a Christian lifestyle of love and service. We aim to:
- Reach people with a loving message of faith and hope
- Equip believers to maturity so they may serve God and equip others
- Encourage one another in loving and respectful fellowship.
Throughout both the local church and audio and video broadcast around the world, Pastor Anibal's insights into the Word challenge and inspire believers to grow to new levels in their relationship with God and their service to others. His practical, personable teaching style causes the scriptures to come alive in the hearts of people and draws them into a personal encounter with Jesus. This life-changing ministry is committed to raising up and equipping believers to answer the call of God upon their lives and to become all that He created them to be.
Pastor Anibal and Judy are proud parents of Jesse, Melanie and Judy Ann.
Our Mission
To worship God and promote a Christian lifestyle of love and service.
Our purpose
Reach people with a loving message of faith and hope.
Equip believers to maturity so they may serve God and serve others.
Encourage one another in loving and respectful fellowship.
Reach, equip and encourage - We want to keep it simple so people remember what we are about.
Check out the "REACHING" process we use to fullfil our mission. It is a strategy built upon God's biblical purposes for our lives, focused on four core areas: Membership, Maturity, Ministry and Mission.
2,000 years ago, the most controversial figure in History, Jesus Christ, was born in a manger. Though he came into the world in a humble way, to an everyday couple, that small baby was God's answer to humanity's desperate need for salvation.
Doomed by our sin, we were separated from God and cut off from the richness of His blessings. God, because of His great love for us, wrapped Himself in humanity and came to earth as a simple man Jesus. He lived and dwelt among us and eventually sacrificed Himself, all because of His great love. The cost of our sin was His life, and He gave it that we might receive salvation through Him.
John 3:16, one of the most famous scriptures, illustrates just this, "For God so loved the world, that He gave His one and only son. That whoever believes in Him, will not perish but have everlasting life."
Jesus became the bridge between mankind and God so that we can have a relationship with the Father. He is our Savior, our healer, and our friend.
Jesus came that we might have a more abundant life. He came to carry our weaknesses, our sickness, our pain, so that we can walk in total freedom, peace, power and purpose.
Jesus is more than a historical figure or a great teacher who once lived. He conquered death so that we might live. We don't have to earn His love and salvation, its' a free gift available to all who will believe. Jesus wants to have a personal relationship with us. All we have to do is receive it by faith, and come to Him just the way we are.
Ready to accept Christ?
Click on the video above and let Anibal lead you in a simple prayer that can change your life forever.
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. - John 3:16
Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus - Romans 8:1
If you declare with your mouth, Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. - Romans 10:9
REACH is the name of the development process prepared where every member can grow and develop in their relationship with God. We provide each member of our church the opportunity to reach their potential in Christ.
This process consists of four stages and each one has its purpose:
Membership (fellowship)
This initial class introduces you to our church, purpose and mission. Every person who decides to be a member of the church is required to take the membership class.
Maturity (growth)
It will help you develop foundational skills and habits necessary for ongoing spiritual growth and faith development.
Ministry (serving)
It will help you discover and identify your gifts and abilities God has given you so you can be useful to serve in any area of ministry.
Mission (purpose)
This class helps you to recognize a particular Ministry where your life is useful and of greater impact. It is a step of faith, obedience and commitment to the will of God in the believer's life.
At the end of each class participants are encouraged to practice what they have learned to reinforce their spiritual growth and strengthen its level of commitment in the church.
These "Foundation" classes are designed to transforms to give the new believer and the person who has reconciled his life with God a solid foundation for their Christian life.
Participants receive free class materials, a bible (if you don't have one), and other scripture resources to help you in your walk.
Classes consist of a series of 6 to 8 sessions of basic foundational teachings of the Bible that will help you understand and become familiar with your new faith. Many questions are answered in these sessions.
Some topics covered are: the authority and truth of the Bible, Who is Jesus Christ, the importance of prayer, how does God work in our daily lives and circumstances, and more.
It is highly recommended for new believers, and anyone who wants to renew their faith.

Jesus said in Luke 6:38, "Give and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you."
Giving is a biblical principal that when lived by, produces a rich harvest in our lives.
Giving is not limited to simply our finances; it's a lifestyle. When we live with the spirit of giving, when we give the Lord our tithes and our offerings, when we give to those in need, when we give of our time, our love, our resources, we are sowing seeds that God will make sure blossoms into a rich harvest! Not just of financial blessings, but rich in all aspects of life.
God desires for you to be the most blessed and most prosperous in the land, that we prosper in our homes, relationships and in health. Make sure you work with God and allow His door of favor and provision to open like a flood by putting actions to your faith through giving.
Live with a giving spirit in your life. God is more concerned with the condition of our hearts as we give, rather than the quantity. It is only when we give of ourselves through our time, our talent and treasure that we are most fulfilled.
Do you need a miracle in your life? A Breakthrough? A financial need? Try giving. God says, "Test me in this," "See if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessings there will not be room enough to store it." - Malachi 3:10.
Proverbs 3:9-10 - "Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine."
Malachi 3:10 - "Bring the whole tithe to the storehouses, that there may be food in my house. 'Test me in this,' says the Lord Almighty, 'and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.'"

Musical Concerts
At least once a year we host a musical concert inviting a wide variety of musical guests, including well known Christian singers (contemporary, rap, traditional, etc) to be a part of a night of song and praise. Usually held on a Saturday evening, we invite the community, local churches and family and friends to enjoy good Christian music.
"My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge." - Hosea 4:6 (NIV)
Christian education is at the very heart of Sea of Galilee. In the educational process the Spirit of God encounters people of all ages so that they are nurtured in faith, grow in knowledge and experience, and are inspired and empowered to live as disciples of Jesus Christ.
